For many people, it’s quite normal to spend a large part of the working day sitting at a computer or laptop. But even after work, we often find ourselves still in front of a screen. Whether it’s sorting out some paperwork or playing video games for a few more hours: without realising it, we spend a lot of time sitting in front of a screen. By the end of the day, your body may let you know that it’s had enough. In this blog, you can read about the symptoms that can arise from working at a screen and what you can do about them.
What health problems can you develop from working at a computer screen?
Sitting in front of a screen for long periods can affect your body in various ways. Particularly when you sit in the same position for a long time or keep making the same movements, certain parts of your body can be put under extra strain. Think, for example, of using a mouse and keyboard for long periods, whilst your neck, shoulders and upper body move relatively little.
Common complaints associated with working at a computer screen include:
- Tense neck and shoulders
- A stiff or aching back
- Pain in your wrists
- Tingling in your hands and fingers
- Headache
According to the FNV You can start to experience symptoms after just two hours of working at a computer screen. Symptoms in your arm, neck or shoulder are often referred to as KANS. This stands for ‘Arm, Neck and Shoulder Symptoms’. The term RSI was often used for this in the past.
How can you minimise the health issues caused by working at a computer screen?
When it comes to working at a computer screen, people often talk about good or bad posture. However, there isn’t just one perfect posture that you have to maintain all day long. It is particularly important to change your posture regularly and get plenty of exercise.
Just getting up every now and then to walk around a bit or fetch a drink can help. It’s also important that you stay active not only during your working day, but afterwards as well. You should also take a look at your workspace. A properly adjusted chair, the correct height for your monitor and a suitable mouse and keyboard can help make your work more comfortable.
When can a physiotherapist help?
Sometimes symptoms keep recurring, despite getting plenty of variety and exercise. These symptoms can also make it more difficult to work, exercise or carry out everyday activities.
A physiotherapist can work with you to assess your symptoms and the way you put strain on your body throughout the day. You can also receive advice and exercises tailored to your situation. This will help you build a body that can cope better with the strain of your working day.
Keep moving throughout your working day
Spending hours in front of a screen does not necessarily lead to health problems. Ensuring plenty of variety, moving around regularly and paying attention to your posture can help keep your body active during a long working day.
