Shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy at FRISKFYSIO Amstelveen may be considered for certain long-term tendon or heel problems. Your physiotherapist will first discuss whether this treatment is suitable for your condition, what alternatives are available and what you can expect from it. Results vary from person to person and depending on the condition.

What exactly is shockwave therapy?

In shockwave therapy, a device transmits mechanical pressure waves through the skin to the area being treated. A session at our clinic lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The treatment may feel sensitive or painful. We discuss the potential benefits and risks beforehand and evaluate the results together.

What can you expect?

  • Shockwave is a treatment that does not involve surgery or injections.
  • The number of sessions and the outcome cannot be guaranteed in advance.
  • The treatment may cause temporary pain, redness or swelling.
  • You will discuss your health, medication and any reasons for not undergoing treatment with your physiotherapist.
  • Advice on physical activity levels and suitable exercises will continue to form part of the treatment plan.

When might shockwave therapy be appropriate?

Whether shockwave therapy is appropriate depends on the diagnosis and previous treatment. It is not a standard solution for all muscle, tendon or joint problems.

In the case of persistent heel pain caused by plantar fasciopathy, the Dutch guideline recommends shockwave therapy as a possible additional treatment if at least 12 weeks of advice and exercise therapy have proved ineffective, and if you have not yet undergone shockwave therapy during the same period of symptoms. You will make this decision together with your practitioner.

In the case of Achilles tendon problems, the evidence for the treatment’s effectiveness is inconclusive. You should therefore also discuss other treatment options and the expected benefits in your particular situation.
