Obesity can make it harder to exercise. At FRISKFYSIO Amstelveen, we help you become more active, step by step, in a way that suits your abilities and goals.
Obesity

How does obesity occur?
Obesity is often caused by a combination of factors. Sleep, medication, health and the environment can also play a part. Your GP can discuss with you what support or treatment is appropriate. Examples of such factors include:
- Genetic factors
- Social factors
- Psychological factors
- Cultural environmental factors
- Cultural behavioural factors
Does obesity make it harder to exercise? Together, we’ll look at your capabilities, symptoms and goals. You’ll receive guidance on gradually building up your physical activity and exercises to do at home through our own FRISK App. For a more comprehensive approach to treating obesity, it remains important to consult your GP.

What can cause obesity?
Obesity can be associated with health problems and make it difficult to be physically active on a daily basis. The effects vary from person to person. Discuss your health and any symptoms you may have with your GP. Examples of conditions that may occur include:
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Diabetes
- Osteoarthritis
- Respiratory problems
- Stroke
- High blood pressure
- Lymphedema
- Depression
How can we help you?
We’ll discuss what you’d like to be able to do again and which symptoms are limiting your movement. Together, we’ll gradually build up your exercises and daily activities. We’ll tailor the intensity to your abilities and assess how things are going. Physiotherapy can provide support with movement; however, weight loss or completely pain-free movement cannot be guaranteed. You should discuss a more comprehensive treatment for obesity with your GP. Please also read the information about obesity on Thuisarts.nl.
You can find your personalised exercises in the FRISK App. We’ll explain how to carry them out and tailor the programme to your progress. Get to know our team.

If muscle or joint pain makes it difficult to move, physiotherapy can help you gradually build up your activities at a suitable pace. We will assess what is limiting you and tailor the treatment to your abilities. Physiotherapy focuses on movement and function; please discuss a more comprehensive treatment for obesity with your GP.
We will discuss your health, daily activities, symptoms and goals. The physiotherapist will then assess how you move. Together, we will draw up a plan that suits your physical capacity. If an assessment by your GP is required, we will discuss this with you.
You don’t need to reach a certain weight first to discuss your exercise options. We’ll work out together what’s achievable at the moment. Discuss with your GP what support is appropriate for obesity, especially if you have other health problems as well.
That varies from person to person. A gentle walk, a bike ride or some exercises can be a good place to start. Choose activities that you can keep up with and build up gradually. If pain or other symptoms are holding you back, your physiotherapist will help you adjust the level of exertion. No. Our physiotherapy programme focuses on your mobility issues and gradually building up your activity levels. A combined lifestyle intervention (GLI) takes a broader approach to lifestyle. Your GP can discuss with you whether a GLI or another form of treatment is appropriate.
That depends on your symptoms, goals and progress. We’ll discuss regularly what you can do on your own and whether further support is needed. For information on costs, please see rates and fees.
A physiotherapist from our team will discuss with you which course of treatment is best suited to your symptoms and goals. This ensures that your treatment remains tailored to your situation. Meet our team.
You will receive your home exercise programme via our own FRISK App. There you can view your own exercise programme. Your physiotherapist will explain which exercises to do, how to perform them and how to gradually increase the intensity.
As well as your own exercise programme, you can use the FRISK App book, change or cancel appointments. You’ll also find information about our team, our areas of specialism, information on medical conditions, the latest news, our online shop and contact details.
