Oncological complaints

Cancer and its treatment can affect your fitness, strength and day-to-day functioning. Exercise can help you stay as fit as possible, but what is achievable varies from person to person and depending on the stage of treatment.

Support tailored to your situation

At FRISKFYSIO Amstelveen, we discuss your symptoms, your goals and the advice given by your treating doctor. We assess which form of support is appropriate at our practice and when specialist care or a referral is required. An exercise programme may focus on:

  • Maintaining or building up fitness and muscle strength
  • Balancing activity and rest when feeling tired
  • Practising the everyday activities that are important to you

Your needs and preferences are our priority. Together, we’ll discuss which support best suits your medical treatment and daily life. Are you unable to come to the practice? Ask about the options for home-based physiotherapy.

What can you expect from the support?

The effects of exercise vary from person to person. We tailor the exercises and rest periods to your abilities and adapt the programme to reflect any changes in your treatment or symptoms. Do not push yourself too hard. Please also discuss any new or worsening symptoms with your treating doctor or nurse specialist.

Exercise can help improve fitness, muscle strength and reduce fatigue, but it is not a substitute for cancer treatment.

What sort of symptoms can you discuss?

Please tell us how the illness or treatment is affecting you. Some examples are given below. Not every symptom can be treated with physiotherapy; if necessary, we will refer you to your doctor or a suitable healthcare professional.

  • Rigid scar tissue
  • Condition loss
  • Tension complaints
  • Pain
  • Skin changes
  • Fatigue
  • Moisture deposits
