Do you suffer from severe, persistent pain under your heel that makes walking difficult? You may be suffering from a heel spur. Shockwave therapy for heel spurs can be an effective solution. In this blog, we’ll tell you more about heel spurs and shockwave therapy as a treatment method, and how it can help you.
What is heel spur?
Heel spur is a common cause of heel pain and is caused by a calcification of the tendon plate under the foot. This calcification causes a sharp, stabbing pain when walking or standing, especially where the tendon attaches to the bottom of the heel. Heel spur can greatly affect your daily life and is most common in people aged between 40 and 60.
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a treatment method used for pain in tendons, muscles and joints. This therapy uses pressure waves (shockwaves) that are directed at the painful areas. The pressure waves stimulate the release of substances that promote recovery. During treatment, you may experience some pain. If it becomes too painful, you can of course indicate this. In addition, the physiotherapist keeps a close eye on what is feasible for you.
How does shockwave therapy work for heel spurs?
Shockwave therapy for heel spurs is carried out using high-energy sound waves. The therapist uses a special treatment head which is aimed at the exact location of the heel spur. A gel is applied to the treated area to improve the transmission of the pressure waves. The shock waves stimulate metabolism in the treated area, leading to accelerated tissue repair, a reduction in calcifications and significant pain relief.
