From 12 November 2025, the annual switching period for health insurance has started again. Until 31 December, you can switch to another insurer or change your current policy. Good news, most health insurers will not increase the premium for basic insurance next year.
But what if you need regular physiotherapy, then it is important to look carefully at which insurance policy really suits your situation. In the forest of healthcare policies, which often seem little different at first glance, it can be difficult to see the wood for the trees. To help you make an informed choice, we have listed the most important points and tips for you.
Tip 1: Look carefully at what is (and is not) included in the basic insurance policy
The basic insurance reimburses physiotherapy only in a limited number of cases.
- If you are under 18 years old, you will be fully reimbursed for all treatments.
- If you are 18 years or older, you usually pay for the first 20 treatments yourself.
- Only if you have a chronic condition that appears on the list of the Netherlands Healthcare Institute, treatments are reimbursed from the 21st onwards from the basic insurance.
- In all other cases, you pay for the treatments from supplementary insurance, or you pay for them yourself.
Our tip: for most people who need regular physiotherapy, supplementary insurance is the wisest choice.
Note: the list of chronic conditions contains many medical terms. If you doubt whether your condition is on it, feel free to ask your health insurer or physiotherapist.
Tip 2: Estimate how many treatments you need
Try to estimate in advance how much physiotherapy you will use annually, that will help in choosing the right supplementary insurance.
- Occasional complaints: a package of 6 to 9 treatments per year is usually sufficient.
- Regular or long-term complaints: prefer to opt for 18 or more treatments.
- Chronic condition: check whether it is covered by the basic insurance (after the 20th treatment).
Think ahead: if you know you are expecting rehabilitation or a sports injury, for example, more comprehensive cover is often more advantageous than paying for individual treatments yourself.
Tip 3: Compare supplementary insurance policies carefully
The differences between insurers are huge. When comparing, pay attention not only to the premium but also to the terms and conditions.
Important points to check:
- How many treatments do you get reimbursed per year?
- Is the reimbursement per treatment or per total amount?
- Can you choose your own physiotherapist, or only from contracted therapists?
- Is there a waiting period before you can use the cover?
Our tip: always look at what you really need. A cheap policy seems attractive, but may end up costing you more if the coverage is limited.
Tip 4: Check whether your physiotherapist is contracted
Health insurers sign contracts with physiotherapy practices. If your physiotherapist is contracted, you will usually get full reimbursement.
Without a contract, some insurers reimburse only part of the amount.
So always ask if your physiotherapist has a contract with your health insurer.
At FRISKFYSIO, we have contracts with all health insurers, so you usually don't have to worry about reimbursement.
Tip 5: Consider whether paying yourself is sometimes more advantageous
Not everyone needs supplementary insurance. If you only visit once or twice a year, it may be cheaper to pay for those treatments yourself instead of paying additional monthly premium.
At FRISKFYSIO, you also have the option of purchasing a physiotherapy package. That is a rides card with x number of treatments. This is cheaper than individual treatments. View the packages here.
Calculation example:
Supplementary insurance with 6 treatments often costs €5-€8 a month, about €60-€100 a year. If you spend less than that on physiotherapy, it's better to pay per treatment.
Tip 6: Keep an eye on your deductible
Most physiotherapy treatments are covered by the supplementary insurance, so the deductible usually does not play a role. But for chronic indications covered by the basic insurance, the deductible does apply for the initial costs. Take this into account when estimating your total healthcare costs.
Tip 7: Use reliable comparison websites
We may not recommend specific health insurers, but we are happy to help you make sense of the information. Fortunately, there are several independent websites that make comparing health insurance a lot easier.
We recommend that you use one or more of these sites to properly inform yourself so that you can make an informed choice:
