The new year started with an expansion in the basic health insurance package. Physiotherapy for osteoarthritis was already reimbursed from the supplementary insurance. Patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee joints will now be reimbursed for the first 12 physiotherapy and exercise therapy treatments from the basic insurance since 1 January 2018.
Did you know that over 3 million people in the Netherlands suffer from osteoarthritis? This can have quite an impact on daily life? Movements you make every day without thinking about it such as getting up, climbing stairs, opening a door or combing your hair, for example, suddenly don't happen so naturally anymore!
The most common complaints
In osteoarthritis, cartilage becomes thinner and softer and is also often called 'wear and tear'. This term is actually incorrect! Why not? Cartilage changes but does not wear out. Osteoarthritis in most cases leads to deformation of the bone causing pain and stiffness.

- Joint stiffness
- Impaired mobility
- Pain during movement
- Creaking joints
- Fatigue
- Muscle pain
The most common causes

- Old age
- Due to a previous trauma or injury (think of a fracture caused by an accident, for example)
- Overloading the body
- Heredity
- An injury
