Although the following suggestions do not guarantee that you will not catch the virus, they are simple ways to look after yourself as best you can.

Tip 1: get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep ensures that your body produces the proteins it needs and can fight off infections and inflammation. These proteins, known as cytokines, are produced and released whilst you sleep. Do you suffer from sleep problems? If so, try to compensate for this during the day with a maximum of two 30-minute naps. This will help mitigate the effects of sleep deprivation on your immune system and your day-to-day functioning, without immediately disrupting your normal sleep pattern. Do you simply find it hard to fall asleep? If so, you can search for ‘binaural beats’ on YouTube. These can help make it easier for you to fall asleep.

Tip 2: Eat less sugar

Sugar is a food source for harmful bacteria, which thrive at the expense of the beneficial bacteria. In a healthy person, 85% of the gut flora consists of beneficial bacteria. Fermented foods, such as sauerkraut or carrots, actually stimulate the growth of these good bacteria. As a result, you will experience greater energy and vitality.

Tip 3: reduce stress

Stress is your body’s response in times of distress to keep you safe. It also makes us more vulnerable to infections and illnesses, both at work and outside it. There are various forms of mindfulness exercises, ranging from the slow, flowing movements of yoga and tai chi to countless breathing techniques.

Tip 4: move more

Regular exercise helps to fight off pathogens. Exercise stimulates your immune cells and ensures they become active in your body. It also gives you more energy and can have a positive effect on your mood.
Would you like some tips on how to get more exercise? Then take a look at our article ‘How to stay fit’.
